Reported Violence Disrupts Voting at ADC Candidate’s Polling Unit in Osun
Voting in the Osun State governorship election was reportedly disrupted at the polling unit of African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salam in Ejigbo Local Government Area following an alleged attack by a suspected political thug identified as “Big Hammer.”
The incident reportedly caused panic among voters, election agents and residents, with some fleeing the area for safety. A video circulating online showed people running in different directions, while one individual said they had to jump over a fence to escape.
Another video showed a damaged vehicle as residents expressed concern over the violence and destruction allegedly associated with the election.
The development has heightened concerns about security and possible voter intimidation as voting and collation continue across the state. The ADC candidate is regarded as one of the major contenders in the election, making the reported incident particularly significant.
Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke, shortly after casting his ballot in Ede North Local Government Area, alleged that there was a plan to disrupt the election. He claimed that a police officer known as “London” had been brought from Port Harcourt to interfere with the voting process, particularly in Ede.
Adeleke called on the Inspector General of Police and other security authorities to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the electoral process follows established procedures. He also alleged that there were attempts to bypass the normal collation process from polling units through wards and local governments.
The allegations by the governor and the reported disruption at Salam’s polling unit have intensified concerns about possible violence, intimidation and interference during the election.
Political parties and stakeholders have urged security agencies to protect voters, electoral officials and party agents while ensuring that everyone can participate freely and safely.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is also expected to ensure that voting and collation are conducted transparently and in accordance with electoral guidelines, with results reflecting the votes legitimately cast by the people of Osun State.
As the election process continues, attention remains on security agencies and electoral officials to prevent further incidents and safeguard the integrity of the exercise.
