NSCDC Orders Probe Into Deaths Of Suspected Illegal Miners In Niger Custody

18th August, 2026 | News

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has ordered a high-powered investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners arrested during enforcement operations in Niger State.

The suspects were arrested around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis on September 15 and 16, 2026. The deaths were discovered on September 17.

NSCDC said the investigation will examine the suspects’ condition upon arrest, their period in custody, detention conditions, medical care and other relevant circumstances.

The remains have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination to determine the actual cause of death.

While the Niger State Command attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak, NSCDC cautioned that this has not been medically or laboratory confirmed and urged the public to avoid speculation.

The Niger State Police Command has also ordered a separate investigation into the incident.
