Food Inflation Soars in Kogi, Niger and Benue as Nigerians Face Rising Cost of Living

Food prices continued to rise across Nigeria in June 2026, with Kogi, Niger and Benue recording the highest year-on-year food inflation rates, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The report showed Nigeria’s national food inflation rate stood at 17.52%, but Kogi recorded the highest at 53.02%, followed by Niger (43.83%) and Benue (40.83%). The increase was driven by rising prices of staple foods such as tomatoes, fresh pepper, crayfish, beef, garri, cassava flour, yam, cowpea, Irish potatoes and bananas.

On a month-on-month basis, food inflation rose from 2.98% in May to 3.75% in June, indicating a faster pace of food price increases.

While some states, including Borno, Benue and Bayelsa, recorded slight declines in monthly food prices, inflationary pressure remained high in many parts of the country, raising fresh concerns over food affordability, household purchasing power and food security.

The report also showed that Niger State recorded the highest overall inflation rate nationwide, followed by Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As inflation continues to impact millions of households, many Nigerians hope for stronger policies that will improve agricultural production, stabilize food prices and ease the cost-of-living burden.
