The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has launched a school-based nutrition programme in Nigeria, warning that poor dietary habits among adolescents could affect their health, productivity and the country’s future workforce.

The initiative, launched at Junior Secondary School, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, aims to help schools influence students’ food choices and promote healthier lifestyles.

JICA Nigeria said about 31% of Nigerians aged 10–19 are reportedly thin or underweight, while adolescent girls face particular risks, with about 55% affected by anaemia.

The programme will run until January and will train teachers while encouraging schools to establish nutrition clubs and gardens. Activities will include cooking demonstrations, nutrition debates, fruit and lunchbox challenges, as well as greater engagement with parents.

JICA’s Princess Kelechi Barry-Chukwu described adolescent nutrition as a national development issue, stressing that adolescence is a critical period of growth and an important opportunity to build a healthier and more productive population.

Education and agricultural officials also backed school gardens and stronger nutrition education, calling for practical lessons that can help students make healthier food choices.
