Akwa Ibom Government Moves to Tackle Flooding, Orders Assessment of Vulnerable Communities

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has directed relevant government agencies to identify flood-prone communities and implement immediate intervention measures following recent flooding in parts of the state.

The governor, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, announced the directive during a constituency briefing and empowerment programme in Abak Local Government Area.

She disclosed that the Akwa Ibom State Emergency Management Agency (AKSEMA) and the Ministry of Environment have already assessed affected areas and submitted their reports. According to the findings, several communities will require the desilting of drains and culverts, while illegal structures obstructing waterways may be removed to ensure effective flood control.

The deputy governor attributed recurring flooding to indiscriminate waste disposal and the construction of buildings on drainage channels and flood plains. She urged residents to support government efforts by keeping drains and culverts free of refuse.

She also revealed that the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) is currently carrying out desilting operations across the state to improve water flow during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) said ongoing investments in drainage infrastructure, road construction and flood control projects helped reduce the impact of the recent heavy rainfall in many parts of Uyo.

The authority also announced plans to begin a city-wide enforcement exercise to remove illegal structures, shanties and other encroachments blocking drainage channels, waterways and government rights-of-way as part of efforts to prevent future flooding.
