Ambassador-Designate To Algeria Mohammed Lele Dies In Turkey

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Lele.

Lele passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara after a prolonged illness. Until his death, he served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the late diplomat was described as a dedicated and exemplary officer who served Nigeria with distinction. The ministry highlighted his intellectual depth, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to advancing the country’s foreign policy goals, noting that his death is a significant loss to both the Foreign Service and the nation.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received his remains at the International Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport alongside senior officials, paying tribute to him as a humble, hardworking professional whose contributions will be deeply missed.

Born in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and joined Nigeria’s foreign service in 2001. Over the course of his career, he served in diplomatic missions in Germany, Togo, and Saudi Arabia before being appointed ambassador-designate by President Bola Tinubu.

Following his passing, he was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.

The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for strength and comfort for those affected by the loss.
