Akwa Ibom Governor Urges Residents to Help Prevent Flooding by Keeping Drains Clear

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has appealed to residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean following the flash floods caused by Thursday’s heavy rainfall.

Speaking after returning from an official engagement, the governor sympathised with families and business owners affected by the flooding, while acknowledging the government’s responsibility to respond to such disasters. However, he stressed that preventing flooding requires a joint effort between government and citizens.

Eno noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of heavy rainfall and possible flooding, urging residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels and waterways.

He explained that while the government will continue to desilt major drains and respond to emergency situations, individuals must also ensure that the drainage systems around their homes remain free of waste to allow the free flow of water.

The governor described the incident as a flash flood resulting from intense rainfall, adding that although natural disasters cannot be prevented, their impact can be significantly reduced through proper environmental sanitation and collective responsibility.

He urged communities to work together with the government to keep culverts and drainage channels clear throughout the rainy season to help minimise future flooding.
