Schoolchildren, Teachers Abducted in Oyo Regain Freedom After 56 Days in Captivity

The schoolchildren and teachers abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been successfully rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the rescue was carried out by Nigerian security agencies without any negotiation or concession to the kidnappers. He revealed that eight members of the kidnapping gang were arrested and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), while several others were neutralised during the operation.

Onanuga also disclosed that a notorious gang leader whose release had been demanded by the abductors remains in custody and is facing prosecution.

In a video released after the rescue, one of the freed teachers expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their release, while the rescued pupils also thanked the President.

Reacting to the development, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the rescue as a huge relief, saying he was overjoyed by the safe return of the victims.

President Tinubu praised the military, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force for the successful operation and directed emergency agencies to provide the rescued children and teachers with medical care, counselling, and other necessary support as they recover from the traumatic experience.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esiele communities of Oriire LGA. During the attack, one teacher was killed, while another later died in captivity, sparking nationwide outrage and renewed calls for improved security in schools.
