Makinde Hails Rescue of Abducted Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers After 57 Days

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed relief and gratitude following the successful rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers who were abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area, describing their release as a “big relief” for the state.

Speaking after the announcement, Makinde thanked the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, security commanders, and President Bola Tinubu for their efforts in securing the victims’ freedom after 57 days in captivity.

The Presidency confirmed that all the victims were rescued during a coordinated security operation. According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested and are currently in DSS custody, while several others were neutralised during the operation.

He added that the rescue was achieved without conceding to the kidnappers’ demands, including requests for the release of a notorious gang leader who remains in detention and is facing prosecution.

A video released after the rescue showed one of the freed teachers thanking President Tinubu and the security agencies for their commitment and courage, saying their efforts made it possible for the victims to return home safely.

The rescue marks the end of a traumatic ordeal that began when armed men attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting pupils and teachers and prompting widespread concern over school security in Nigeria.
