Kaduna Launches Five-Year Family Planning Strategy to Improve Maternal and Child Health

The Kaduna State Government has launched its Family Planning Strategic Plan (2026–2030) and Costed Implementation Plan, reaffirming its commitment to improving maternal and child health and expanding access to quality reproductive health services across the state.

Speaking at the launch in Kaduna, Governor Uba Sani, represented by Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe, said the new policy documents provide a clear roadmap for strengthening family planning services, promoting healthier families and supporting the state’s drive toward Universal Health Coverage and improved primary healthcare.

Balarabe described the initiative as a symbol of hope for women, children and families, noting that family planning is not only about contraceptives but also about saving lives, reducing preventable maternal and infant deaths, and empowering families to make informed decisions about child spacing and reproductive health.

She acknowledged that challenges such as inadequate awareness, cultural misconceptions, poor access to healthcare, limited funding and shortages of skilled health workers continue to affect underserved communities.

According to her, the strategic plan was developed through broad consultations involving government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, professional bodies and community representatives.

The plan focuses on improving service delivery, ensuring the availability of family planning commodities, strengthening healthcare worker capacity, enhancing monitoring and evaluation systems, and mobilising sustainable funding for implementation.

The Kaduna State Government also pledged to ensure that every woman, regardless of her location or economic status, has access to accurate reproductive health information and quality family planning services. Deputy Governor Balarabe called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, civil society groups, the media and the private sector to support the successful implementation of the strategy.
