Edo Governor Pledges ₦41 Million Support for Returnees Evacuated from South Africa
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced a ₦41 million support package for Edo indigenes recently evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic attacks, with each returnee set to receive ₦1 million to help them rebuild their lives.
Speaking while receiving the returnees at the Government House in Benin City, the governor said the financial assistance is aimed at helping them secure accommodation and reintegrate into society. He also promised access to soft loans for those interested in starting businesses.
Okpebholo assured the returnees that the funds would be disbursed within 24 hours to prevent them from being stranded, encouraging them to focus on rebuilding their future rather than the losses they suffered abroad.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Edo citizens in distress wherever they may be, while emphasizing that there would be no retaliation despite the xenophobic attacks.
On behalf of the returnees, Riches Unubun expressed appreciation to both the Edo State and Federal Governments for facilitating their safe evacuation and return to Nigeria.
The Director-General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Lucky Agazuma, also commended the governor for his continued support for Edo indigenes facing challenges outside the country.
