Kwara Monarch Regains Freedom After Nearly Two Months in Captivity
The traditional ruler of Olohuntele Community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has regained his freedom after spending almost two months in captivity following his abduction by suspected terrorists.
According to sources, the monarch was kidnapped on April 15, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m. when armed attackers reportedly took him from his community and transported him to an undisclosed location.
Sources familiar with the matter said the traditional ruler was released on Tuesday evening after negotiations between his captors and his family. The release was reportedly secured following the payment of a substantial ransom and the provision of a motorcycle, among other demands.
A family member, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the incident, confirmed the monarch’s return and expressed gratitude that he was released alive.
According to the source, the monarch returned home in a weakened and distressed condition after enduring nearly two months in captivity. The family noted that the ordeal had taken a physical and emotional toll on him.
His release has brought relief to residents of Olohuntele and neighbouring communities, many of whom had been worried about his safety since his abduction.
Nine Kidnap Victims Also Regain Freedom
In a related development, nine residents of the Idi-Iya community near Yaru in Ifelodun Local Government Area have also regained their freedom after spending several weeks in captivity.
The victims were abducted on April 23, 2026, by kidnappers operating in the area. According to security sources, they were released on Tuesday evening after the alleged payment of a substantial ransom.
A security source confirmed that all nine victims returned alive, dismissing earlier reports that suggested two of the abductees may have died while in captivity.
The source stated that the victims were reunited with their families following their release and are receiving support after the traumatic experience.
Security Efforts Continue
Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly arrested four suspected criminals accused of looting homes, livestock, and other valuables from communities abandoned by residents due to persistent bandit attacks.
Authorities continue efforts to address the growing security challenges in parts of Kwara State, where incidents of kidnapping and banditry have raised concerns among local communities.
The latest releases have provided some relief to affected families, although residents continue to call for stronger security measures to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property across the region.
