Anambra Flooding: Six Children Rescued, One Missing
Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall at Ring Road, Agu Awka, Anambra State, has left one person missing after six children were rescued by emergency responders.
Officials from Awka South Local Government Area said the situation has been brought under control, while the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) continue to coordinate rescue and response efforts.
The rescued children were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, for medical attention. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing person.
The flooding caused significant disruption around Ring Road, Awka, with reports showing floodwaters overwhelming parts of the area. Emergency responders were deployed after several people were caught in the flooding.
The incident comes amid a fresh high-flood-risk advisory from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), covering September 19 to 25. The advisory lists Anambra among states vulnerable to riverine flooding and identifies several local government areas, including Awka South, Awka North, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ogbaru, Aguata, Anaocha and Ayamelum, as vulnerable areas.
Following the immediate response in Awka, NEMA and SEMA officials said Ogbaru Local Government Area would be the focus of further assessment to determine the impact of the continued rainfall and identify communities requiring urgent intervention.
NEMA had earlier advised residents, particularly those living in riverine and flood-prone communities, to remain vigilant and be prepared to move to safer, higher ground as water levels rise.
