Desperate Families Search for Loved Ones as Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises
Anxious families are searching for missing relatives after devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-Tibet border killed at least 180 people.
A powerful wall of water and mud swept through villages and towns along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on Wednesday, affecting several districts. Nepal Police said they had recovered 177 bodies, while the disaster agency reported that 823 people, including hundreds of tourists, remained out of contact.
The disaster, which began in the northern district of Rasuwa, spread across seven districts as floodwaters travelled more than 160 kilometres south towards Chitwan near the Indian border.
Authorities are still investigating the cause, although the US Geological Survey said a glacial collapse triggered seismic activity and contributed to the catastrophic flooding in Nepal and Tibet.
Rescue teams continue searching for survivors as desperate families visit hospitals and police helpdesks for information about their missing loved ones. In neighbouring Tibet, Chinese state media reported that three people had died, while hundreds remained missing.
