The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a 29-year-old woman, Mrs Edeh Osinachi, over the alleged physical abuse of a 17-year-old girl in Awka, the state capital.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was handed over to the police by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Education on February 4, 2026. He said the handover was part of ongoing efforts to protect the welfare and safety of students and pupils across the state.
According to the police, the teenager was working as a domestic help under the supervision of the suspect. The case came to light after school authorities noticed serious injuries on the girl during a teaching session and raised an alarm.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that the injuries were allegedly inflicted at home by the suspect. The victim told investigators that she was punished after being accused of using a mobile phone without permission.
SP Ikenga stated that the suspect allegedly admitted to the act during police interrogation.
The Anambra State Police Command commended the school authorities for their vigilance and swift response, noting that their intervention helped prevent further harm to the teenager.
Ikenga assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. He also advised parents and guardians to take on only responsibilities they can adequately manage, warning that negligence often exposes children to abuse when placed in the care of others.
