‘We Have A National Treasure,’ Obasanjo Hails Omotola On Directorial Debut
Updated March 4, 2026
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised Nollywood star Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, describing her as “a treasure” whose talent should be harnessed for the nation’s growth and development.
Obasanjo made the remarks at the premiere of Mother’s Love, Omotola’s directorial debut, held on Sunday at Alliance Française Lagos.
Drawing the actress close in a fatherly gesture, the former president said: “We have a treasure that we must keep and utilise for the development and growth of Nigeria, and there are many like that. We have to keep them and bring them to make meaningful contributions.”
A Rare Presidential Appearance
While Nollywood premieres often attract high-profile guests, it is uncommon for a former president to attend such events. Obasanjo, 88, appeared in a white agbada and blue fila, mingling with guests, posing for photographs and speaking with journalists.
His presence quickly sparked widespread reactions online, with many describing it as a major validation for Nollywood. Others viewed the appearance as a strategic publicity boost for the film.
Celebrating 30 Years in Nollywood
The premiere also marked Omotola’s 30th anniversary in the entertainment industry. Since launching her career in the early 1990s, she has featured in over 100 films, including classics like Mortal Inheritance, as well as internationally recognised titles such as Ije and Alter Ego.
With Mother’s Love, Omotola steps behind the camera, joining a growing list of actor-directors who are shaping Nollywood’s creative direction.
The film stars Olumide Owuru, Noray Nehita and Ifeanyi Kalu, and centres on themes of sacrifice and resilience — subjects that mirror Omotola’s personal journey as a mother of four and wife to Capt. Matthew Ekeinde.
By transitioning into directing, she aligns with industry heavyweights such as Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Genevieve Nnaji, who have significantly expanded Nollywood’s economic and global footprint.
With a glowing endorsement from Obasanjo and a new creative chapter underway, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde continues to demonstrate that her influence extends well beyond acting — solidifying her place as one of Nigeria’s most enduring cultural icons.
