‘Revenue targets mean nothing without impact on people’s lives’ — Peter Obi to Tinubu

‘Revenue targets mean nothing without impact on people’s lives’ — Peter Obi to Tinubu

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s claim of meeting Nigeria’s 2025 revenue target, describing it as troubling and insensitive in the face of unpaid pensions and gratuities owed to retirees.

Obi questioned the President’s sense of compassion toward Nigerians whose livelihoods have been severely strained by his administration’s policies.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Thursday, the former Anambra State Governor said:

“While it is commendable that government revenue targets have been met ahead of schedule, what truly matters is how such resources are deployed to ease the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. Revenue milestones are meaningless if they do not translate into better living conditions for the people.

“Critical sectors and key economic players, including SMEs, are starved of funds, with many struggling to meet obligations to their banks and employees. Some are even forced into protests because of their inability to survive under the current harsh climate.

“Most disturbing is the plight of our retired public servants—men and women who built and defended this nation with their sweat and sacrifice—yet remain unpaid their gratuities and pensions. It is deeply shameful that they are left to beg for what is rightfully theirs, while the government boasts of excess revenue.

“Meeting revenue targets should never be about figures on paper; it should reflect in the welfare of citizens, especially those who have served the country. No nation should abandon its workers, its defenders, or its small businesses in debt and despair.

“It is time for the government to act with responsibility, integrity, and compassion. A New Nigeria is POssible.”
