Police Fire Tear Gas, Arrest Protesters At Abuja Rally Demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Security Forces Disperse #EndSARS Anniversary Protest in Abuja, Arrest Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother, and Journalists

Security forces on Monday fired gunshots and tear gas in Abuja to disperse protesters marking the fifth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement while also demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The protest, held under the banner #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow, began around the Transcorp Hilton and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory before security operatives moved in to stop the demonstration.

Witnesses reported that police fired several tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd, forcing protesters and bystanders to flee. Several arrests were made at different locations across Abuja.

Among those detained were Aloy Ejimakor, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, his brother, and a number of journalists covering the event.

During the chaos, an AFP camera was destroyed, while journalist John Okunyomi was reportedly harassed, detained, and later released.

The incident has drawn criticism from rights observers who say the response mirrors the same heavy-handed tactics that sparked the original #EndSARS protests five years ago.
