Nnamdi Kanu Sentenced To Life In Prison After Conviction On Terrorism Charges
Nnamdi Kanu Convicted on Seven Terrorism Charges, Faces Life Imprisonment
The Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a major judgment in the long-running trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Justice James Omotosho on Thursday found Kanu guilty on all seven terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
In his ruling, the judge said the prosecution presented “credible, compelling, and sufficient” evidence to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. He added that Kanu chose not to present any defence, instead opting to rest his case solely on the prosecution’s submissions — a decision the court said left it with no alternative but to convict him.
Justice Omotosho further criticised Kanu’s pursuit of a Biafran state through violent means, describing IPOB as a terrorist organisation whose activities endangered national security.
Sentencing is expected shortly. However, lead prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) has urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, noting that counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 carry the death sentence due to the severity of the offences.
Awomolo also expressed shock that the defendant had shown no remorse throughout the trial, insisting that Kanu’s conduct remained “consistently unruly”.
