The Lagos State Government has disbursed ₦40 million to the families of officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who died in the line of duty.
At a ceremony held on Wednesday at LASTMA’s headquarters in Oshodi, 20 families received ₦2 million each. The event was coordinated by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa.
Speaking at the event, Giwa stressed that the payment should not be regarded as compensation, noting that no amount of money could replace human life. He described the disbursement as a symbolic gesture of solidarity and an acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by the deceased officers.
“The Lagos State Government remains resolute in its determination to perpetuate the memory of these valiant men and women,” Giwa said. “This intervention is a clear testament that their sacrifices were neither unnoticed nor unappreciated, and that their families will not be left to bear the burden of loss alone.”
He reaffirmed the administration’s people-centred governance approach and its commitment to the welfare of public servants and their dependants.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, commended the initiative, saying it would strengthen confidence in government institutions and reassure serving officers that their dedication would be recognised.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the fallen officers as patriots whose discipline and service would remain permanently recorded in the agency’s history. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for what he termed “humane leadership.”
The widow of LASTMA’s pioneer General Manager, Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, advised beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously, particularly towards the education and welfare of their children.
Delivering a vote of thanks, the wife of the late Adeyemo Rotimi expressed appreciation to the governor on behalf of the families, saying the gesture demonstrated that their loved ones’ sacrifices would not be forgotten.
Beneficiaries included Mrs. Coker, Ola Aminat Adepeju, Arogundade Kudirat Oladunni, Adeyemo Silifat Eniola, Falana Felicia Adeola, Bakare Ajoke Fatima, Giwa Hameedat Oyindamola, Dada Adedoyin Rebecca, Akinsemoyin Toheebat Olasunbo, Sanni Esther Oyeyemi, Junaid Oyinlola Deborah, Aladaba Ibrahim Adewunmi, Alimi Mariam Morenike, Omosebi Temitope Jumoke, Alowooye Folashade Mojisola, and Shittu Adijat Yetunde.
