King Charles III has described the relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria as a “partnership of equals” while hosting President Bola Tinubu at a state banquet in Windsor Castle.

The banquet, held in St George’s Hall, marked the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in nearly four decades and brought together top government officials, business leaders, and cultural figures from both nations.

‘Partnership Built on Mutual Respect’

In his remarks, the British monarch highlighted the deep historical ties between both countries, describing their relationship as one rooted in shared progress and mutual respect.

“Britain and Nigeria share a deep bond and a partnership of equals that has brought enormous benefits to both nations,” he said.

He also praised Nigeria’s growing global influence, describing it as an economic powerhouse that continues to expand its impact internationally.

Celebrating the Nigerian Diaspora

King Charles paid tribute to Nigerians living in the UK, noting their contributions across sectors such as healthcare, business, technology, academia, and the arts.

“We are blessed that so many people of Nigerian heritage are at the heart of British life,” he said, highlighting their role in strengthening bilateral ties.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s cultural influence, referencing the global rise of Afrobeats and Nollywood, and joking about the ongoing “jollof rice debate,” before concluding with the phrase, “Naija no dey carry last.”

Tinubu: People Are the Strongest Bridge

Responding, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of the Nigerian diaspora in sustaining relations between both countries.

“Our people remain the strongest bridge between our two nations,” he said, noting their contributions in healthcare, sports, and other sectors.

He added that both countries share a vision of progress built on common values and mutual respect.

High-Level Attendance and Cultural Icons

The event was attended by prominent figures including Oluremi Tinubu, Queen Camilla, Finance Minister Wale Edun, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Also present were notable Nigerians in the UK such as Maro Itoje, Christine Ohuruogu, Eniola Aluko, Ben Okri, and Tiwa Savage, described by the King as a “living bridge” between both nations.

Ceremony and Diplomatic Engagement

Earlier, Tinubu received a ceremonial welcome featuring a guard of honour and gun salute, as both leaders inspected troops in Windsor.

The two-day visit includes meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and engagements with members of the Nigerian diaspora.

The visit aims to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, security, and education, while reinforcing the strong people-to-people ties between both countries.

London remains home to a large Nigerian community, whose contributions continue to play a vital role in strengthening diplomatic and cultural relations between the UK and Nigeria.
