Individuals At Risk refers to people who face significant threats to their human rights due to various factors such as their beliefs, identity, or political activities. These individuals often find themselves in dire circumstances, vulnerable to persecution, imprisonment, torture, or violence. Here are some key points:

BSTE Foundation’s Role

  • Bringing Smile To Everyone Foundation has been at the forefront of advocating for individuals at risk since its founding. Our mission centres around mobilizing ordinary people worldwide to take action on behalf of others.
  • Through our campaigns, millions of messages have been sent to governments globally, providing hope to those facing human rights abuses. These efforts have led to the release of unjustly imprisoned prisoners of conscience, the discovery of forcibly disappeared individuals, and the protection of human rights defenders.

Prisoners of Conscience

  • A prisoner of conscience is someone imprisoned solely because of their political, religious, or other conscientiously held beliefs. They have not used violence or advocated violence or hatred.
  • BSTE Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience. These individuals often suffer unfair trials and torture.

Human Rights Defenders (HRDs)

  • HRDs play a crucial role in promoting and defending human rights. However, they face immense risks.
  • HRDs are routinely targeted with harassment, smear campaigns, intimidation, unlawful surveillance, detention, sexual violence, and even assassination.
  • Since 1998, an estimated 4,814 HRDs have been killed worldwide, with over 401 HRDs killed in 2022 alone.

Freedom of Expression and Assembly

  • Freedom of expression, association, and assembly are increasingly under attack globally.
  • Advocacy for the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience remains vital in this climate.

Community Impact

  • The impact of human rights violations extends beyond individuals. Families, communities, and organizations also suffer when their members are targeted.
  • Communities face forced evictions, disappearances, and loss of essential voices when HRDs are imprisoned.

In summary, organizations like the BSTE Foundation tirelessly work to protect individuals at risk, amplify their voices, and hold governments accountable. By advocating for the release of prisoners of conscience and supporting human rights defenders, they contribute to a more just and compassionate world.
