Fuel Prices Biting Hard, But Let’s Thank God You’re Better Off, Tinubu Tells Nigerians

10 April, 2026 | News

President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the increasing hardship Nigerians are facing due to rising fuel prices, while urging citizens to remain hopeful and resilient.

Speaking during a visit to Bayelsa State, where he inaugurated several projects, the president admitted that the cost of fuel is placing significant strain on households and businesses. He, however, noted that Nigeria’s situation is not unique, pointing out that other African countries are also grappling with similar economic challenges.

Tinubu compared Nigeria’s circumstances with nations like Kenya, stressing that global economic pressures are affecting multiple economies. Despite the difficulties, he reassured Nigerians that his administration is committed to easing the burden, particularly for vulnerable citizens.

According to the president, the government is actively reviewing economic data and working with relevant ministries to identify measures that can help cushion the impact of current policies. He attributed much of the economic strain to global factors, including international conflicts and the interconnected nature of the world economy.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu’s administration has introduced key economic reforms, notably the removal of the petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira. While these measures are aimed at achieving long-term economic stability, they have contributed to rising inflation and a higher cost of living.

The situation has been further worsened by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving countries such as United States, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted global energy markets.

As a result, petrol prices in Nigeria have surged to over ₦1,200 per litre, intensifying economic pressure on citizens. Despite this, the government insists it will continue to explore solutions to stabilise the economy and improve living conditions.
