Easter: End Terror Reign On Nigerians, Archbishop Martins Tells Political Leaders, Condemns Killings

Adewale Martins has urged Nigerian leaders to take decisive action to end the wave of killings across the country, stressing that the protection of lives must take priority over politics.

In an Easter message released through the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, the cleric expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation, with recent attacks reported in Kwara State, Nasarawa State, and Plateau State.

He described the current period as one marked by both spiritual reflection and national hardship, noting that many Nigerians are grappling with economic struggles and persistent insecurity. Despite these challenges, he encouraged citizens to remain hopeful, drawing strength from the message of Easter, which symbolizes victory over suffering and despair.

While offering prayers for victims of recent violence—particularly those killed in attacks in Jos—the Archbishop condemned the continued bloodshed and criticised the government’s handling of security, saying more must be done to safeguard lives and property.

He warned that ongoing violence has deepened fear among citizens and called on authorities at all levels to demonstrate genuine commitment to ending the crisis. According to him, the repeated attacks highlight the urgent need for stronger security measures and accountability.

Beyond security, he also addressed the rising cost of living, linking economic hardship to recent increases in fuel prices. He said the situation reflects misplaced national priorities and has worsened the burden on ordinary Nigerians.

The Archbishop further urged leaders to embrace sacrificial and people-focused leadership, insisting that public office must be used to serve citizens rather than advance personal or political interests. He added that failure to deliver on these responsibilities should compel underperforming officials to step aside.

Looking ahead to future elections, he encouraged Nigerians to be more intentional in choosing leaders, stressing the importance of electing individuals with integrity, sincerity, and a genuine commitment to public service.

He concluded by calling for unity, peace, and resilience among citizens, urging Nigerians not to lose hope despite current challenges, while offering prayers for victims of violence and comfort for their families.
