Dele Momodu: This Administration Never Wanted An Opposition from Day One, People Are Being Used To Sabotage Democratic Movements

Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately undermining opposition parties and weakening democratic structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Momodu alleged that the current administration showed from the outset that it was unwilling to accommodate a strong opposition. According to him, efforts to influence the next election began immediately after the government assumed office, with certain individuals allegedly deployed to disrupt opposition movements.

Addressing speculation about his defection to the ADC, Momodu firmly denied claims of influence from the APC, describing such assertions as false and politically motivated propaganda.

He further claimed that the ruling party initially underestimated the possibility of unity among key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso. He argued that this miscalculation led to attempts to destabilise major opposition parties, citing what he described as the rapid recognition of factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as evidence.

Momodu also raised concerns about the growing influence of the judiciary in determining political outcomes, alleging that some government officials were attempting to manipulate the system. He warned against any move toward a one-party state, insisting such efforts would ultimately fail.

Criticising the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the ADC’s internal leadership dispute, he accused the electoral body of overstepping its authority. According to him, INEC should have sought judicial clarification rather than making unilateral decisions.

Despite the challenges, Momodu maintained that the opposition remains united and continues to gain support, noting a surge in new memberships within the ADC. He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s democracy would endure and resist any attempt to suppress political plurality.
