Assault On NYSC Member In Anambra ‘Very Wrong’ — Police

Anambra Police Condemn Assault on Female Corps Member, Assure Justice

The Anambra State Police Command has strongly condemned the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elohor, by members of a local security outfit. The Command described the incident as unacceptable and assured the public that justice will be served.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Tochukwu Ikenga made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.

“The video is very wrong. What they did to that lady is very, very wrong,” Ikenga stated, emphasizing that the police remain committed to protecting the lives and rights of residents.

A viral video had shown members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, popularly known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, assaulting Elohor in the Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area. The operatives, who accused the corps member and her colleagues of being fraudsters, reportedly beat her up, tore her clothes, and stripped her naked despite her presenting a valid NYSC identification card.

Ikenga revealed that Elohor personally reached out to him, expressing dissatisfaction with how her complaint was initially handled by the Agunechemba office.

“The point I want to make here is that she was not satisfied with the process she went through in Agunechemba in seeking justice. That was why she escalated the matter to me,” he explained.

According to him, the corps member was invited to the police office but informed them she was undergoing medical treatment and promised to report once she recovered.

“We, the Nigeria Police, Anambra State Command, are ready to ensure justice whenever she comes forward,” Ikenga assured.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government confirmed that the vigilante operatives involved in the assault have been arrested.

“Immediately the incident happened, we arrested the operatives involved and placed them in detention,” said Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, during the same program.
