Police Tactical Teams Take Over Investigation into Killing of ARISE TV Anchor

ARISE Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, has been killed by armed robbers in an attack on her residence at Katampe, Abuja.

The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of ARISE News management, the organisation described the late broadcaster, fondly called Sommie, as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family and a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.”

The statement continued:

“We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

Maduagwu, 29, was not only a dynamic presenter but also a trained lawyer. Colleagues described her as professional, supportive, and a dear friend within and beyond the newsroom.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, has directed the Command’s tactical teams—including the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Special Intelligence Unit, and forensic experts—to take over the investigation.

Confirming the development, FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said the Commissioner had ordered crime scene experts to be part of the probe.

Similarly, the Divisional Police Officer of Katampe, CSP Sadiq Abubakar, noted that officers from the division had already commenced preliminary investigations into the robbery.

Police sources revealed that Maduagwu, who lived alone in Katampe, had no immediate family in Abuja, as her parents reside in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT chapter, has also called for a forensic investigation into her death.
