Passengers Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes While Crossing Niger River to Onitsha

An unspecified number of passengers travelling from Asaba, Delta State, to Onitsha, Anambra State, for business are feared dead following a reported boat accident on the River Niger.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday after some passengers resorted to using boats to cross the river following the closure of the Niger Bridge for repair works.

The bridge closure has disrupted movement between Asaba and Onitsha, forcing commuters to explore alternative means of crossing. While some people reportedly use the bridge walkways and motorcycles, others have turned to boats, which are said to be a cheaper option.

Sources claimed that motorcycles charge about ₦1,000 to transport passengers across the bridge, while boat operators charge as little as ₦500. Some boats are also reportedly provided free of charge.

The latest incident was said to have involved passengers travelling from Asaba to Onitsha, including a couple identified as Mr and Mrs Victor.

However, the number of casualties remains unclear, and no recognised authority had officially confirmed the incident at the time of the report.

A resident of Onitsha who spoke to the publication reportedly confirmed that the boat accident occurred.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of alternative transportation options being used by commuters following the bridge closure.
