Lawyer Raises Alarm Over Alleged Five-Year Detention of Anambra Woman

A lawyer representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, has raised concerns over the alleged prolonged detention of a woman identified as Onyeaka Ozioma Elizabeth, who he claimed has been in custody for more than five years without access to her family or legal counsel.

According to Ejiofor, Elizabeth was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at 33 Onitsha, Anambra State, more than five years ago and was subsequently transferred to the Wawa Military Detention Centre in Kainji, Niger State.

The lawyer said he recently encountered Elizabeth within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where she allegedly recounted details of her detention and ordeal.

Ejiofor claimed that Elizabeth’s family had been unaware of her whereabouts for years, adding that her sister reportedly struggled to believe she was still alive until she was contacted and shown a video of her.

The lawyer questioned the legal basis for keeping a person in detention for such an extended period without access to family members or legal representation.

He described the alleged detention as “illegal and dehumanising” and questioned what kind of justice could result from such circumstances.

Ejiofor also expressed concern about Elizabeth’s physical and psychological condition, saying fear was visible on her face.

According to him, Elizabeth was moved from Anambra State to Kainji and later to Abuja, places he said were unfamiliar to her and far from her family and community.

The lawyer also questioned whether her alleged prosecution was connected to her identity as a Biafran, drawing comparisons with other regional identities in Nigeria.

The allegations have raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding Elizabeth’s arrest, the legal basis for her prolonged detention, her access to legal representation and whether her family was formally informed of her whereabouts.

However, the claims made by the lawyer regarding Elizabeth’s detention and the circumstances of her arrest have not been independently established from the information provided.
