One Dead, Another Trapped as Rescue Efforts Continue After Anambra Building Collapse
Rescue operations are ongoing following the collapse of the three-storey Elite Five Star Lodge in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Emergency responders have recovered the body of a female victim believed to be a student, while the body of a young man, also reportedly a student, has been located beneath the rubble but is yet to be retrieved as search efforts continue.
The building, which collapsed late Sunday night, was said to be occupied by several students and other residents at the time of the incident.
A joint rescue team comprising the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies is leading the operation, using heavy equipment to carefully remove debris in the search for more victims.
Earlier, three injured persons were rescued from the scene and taken to hospital for treatment.
According to the Acting Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mrs. Ndidi Omega, rescue operations will continue until every part of the collapsed structure has been thoroughly searched.
Meanwhile, security personnel have cordoned off the area to allow emergency workers unrestricted access, while residents, students, and sympathisers anxiously await further updates.
Police have also urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and allow rescue teams to carry out their work as investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
