LUTH Resident Doctors’ Strike Enters Eighth Day as Healthcare Services Remain Disrupted
Healthcare services at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) continue to face significant disruption as the strike by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) entered its eighth day.
The industrial action, in line with a directive from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), follows months of unsuccessful negotiations with hospital management over critical welfare issues affecting resident doctors.
At a press briefing, the ARD reiterated two key demands: the immediate completion of the long-delayed renovation of the Resident Doctors’ Quarters and the restoration of call duty meals for doctors working extended shifts.
According to the association, the residential quarters have remained inaccessible for over 18 months due to an unfinished renovation project, forcing many doctors to endure long commutes or sleep in their cars, hospital lounges, and other unsuitable locations after working shifts that often exceed 24 hours.
The doctors also criticised the withdrawal of call duty meals, describing the provision as an essential welfare measure rather than a privilege. They argued that resident doctors handling emergency cases around the clock cannot leave their duty posts to search for food, making the meals crucial for effective patient care.
The ARD appealed to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, and other stakeholders to intervene urgently to resolve the crisis.
The association stressed that while its members remain committed to providing quality healthcare, such care cannot be sustained when healthcare workers’ welfare and basic working conditions are neglected. It also reaffirmed its willingness to continue dialogue in the hope of reaching a swift resolution and restoring normal medical services at LUTH.
