Peter Obi Welcomes Suspension of Planned WAEC, NECO Fee Increase

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO examinations, describing the move as a victory for Nigerians.

The Federal Government announced the suspension of the planned fee adjustment and withdrew its June 18, 2026 circular, stating that wider consultations with stakeholders would take place before any final decision is made.

Reacting in a statement shared on his X account, Obi said the reversal would bring relief to many Nigerian families already struggling with the country’s economic challenges. He noted that the decision demonstrates the importance of public engagement and shows that government policies can be reviewed when citizens raise legitimate concerns.

While commending the government for listening to public opinion, Obi argued that the proposed fee hike should never have been considered at a time when many families are facing financial hardship. He stressed that education should be made more accessible rather than more expensive, especially as Nigeria continues to battle a high number of out-of-school children.

Obi described education as a fundamental right and a public investment, not a means of generating government revenue. He warned that increasing examination costs could discourage school enrolment and place additional financial pressure on parents.

He also called on the government to review other policies that have increased the cost of living, adding that effective leadership includes the willingness to reverse decisions that negatively affect citizens.

Finally, Obi commended parents, civil society organisations, advocacy groups, and other Nigerians whose collective voices contributed to the suspension of the proposed examination fee increase.
