Umahi Denies Coastal Road Responsible for Lagos Flooding
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has dismissed claims that the ongoing Lagos Coastal Road project is responsible for the recent flooding experienced in parts of the state.
Umahi made the remarks on Thursday during the flag-off ceremony for the second phase of the rehabilitation of the Babban Lamba–Sharam Road in Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Addressing concerns over the flooding, the minister said the Federal Government would work with the Lagos State Government to assess the situation and explore measures to address the problem.
“We are going to Lagos with our headmaster, the National Assembly Works Committees, and we are going to see what we can do to help the Lagos State Government solve the flood problem,” Umahi said.
He, however, insisted that the flooding was not caused by the Lagos Coastal Road project.
“But it’s not caused by the coastal road at all. In fact, the coastal road has been elevated to serve as a barrier, preventing ocean water from overflowing into neighbouring communities and estates,” he explained.
Umahi maintained that the design of the coastal highway incorporates measures intended to protect surrounding areas from coastal flooding rather than contribute to it.
