Retired Major General Dies in Bandits’ Captivity, Katsina Government Confirms
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abdulkadir Abubakar, who was being held captive by bandits.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, disclosed that the retired military officer died while in captivity due to health complications related to diabetes and hypertension.
According to the commissioner, extensive efforts by the Katsina State Government and security agencies to secure the General’s release were unsuccessful, resulting in what he described as a tragic outcome.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said.
A Significant National Loss
The state government described the late Major General’s death as a major loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria as a whole, given his distinguished military service and contributions to national development.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, as well as to the nation.
The governor characterized the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges facing many communities and the growing threat posed by criminal groups.
Call for Stronger Action Against Insecurity
Governor Radda said the tragedy highlights the need for greater cooperation and intensified efforts to combat banditry and other forms of violent crime.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Katsina State Government to tackling insecurity and vowed that those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired military officer would be pursued and brought to justice.
The governor also reiterated the state’s determination to continue collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to restore peace, strengthen security, and protect lives and property across Katsina State.
Condolences and Prayers
As tributes and condolences continue to pour in from across the country, the Katsina State Government urged Nigerians to remember the late Major General’s family in their prayers during this difficult period.
The statement concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of the former military officer, whose death has been widely mourned as a significant loss to the nation.
