FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands

Teachers in public schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved demands, leading to the shutdown of several schools.
A visit to institutions such as LEA Primary School, Area 10 and Government Science Technical College, Area 3 revealed empty classrooms and deserted premises, with no teachers or students present.
The strike was declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT chapter, following a directive issued after an emergency meeting of its State Wing Executive Council. The union said the action became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier given to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the government’s failure to address their concerns.
In a communiqué jointly signed by NUT officials, including Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union said the decision followed what it described as continued silence from authorities despite repeated appeals.
The teachers cited the worsening economic conditions and the government’s lack of response to their demands as key reasons for the strike. They stressed that the action would continue indefinitely until concrete steps are taken to address their grievances.
The development has disrupted academic activities across public primary and secondary schools in the FCT, leaving thousands of students temporarily out of the classroom.
