UNIJOS Orders Students to Vacate Hostels Amid Renewed Tension in Jos
Students of the University of Jos have been directed to vacate their hostels following rising security concerns in parts of Jos, Plateau State.
The directive, issued on Wednesday, comes amid renewed tension in areas surrounding the institution, sparking fears over student safety.
In a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, the Vice Chancellor, Tanko Ishaya, ordered the immediate evacuation of students as a precautionary measure.
“The Vice Chancellor has directed the immediate evacuation of students from the university hostels in view of the general security situation and the near chaotic scenarios witnessed in areas close to the university,” the statement said.
To support the evacuation, the Plateau State Government under Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has provided transportation, with special approval granted for movement during curfew hours.
Students within Jos and nearby areas began evacuating on Wednesday afternoon, while those whose families reside outside the city are scheduled to leave from Thursday morning.
Despite the situation, the university assured that adequate security has been deployed to safeguard the campus, adding that efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy.
Students and parents have been urged to remain calm and comply with the evacuation arrangements as authorities continue to monitor developments.
The directive follows fresh tension in Jos shortly after the relaxation of a 48-hour curfew imposed after a deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba.
Reports indicate that sporadic violence has erupted in parts of the city, with unconfirmed casualties, triggering panic among residents and forcing many to flee.
Security presence has reportedly been reinforced in affected areas, although authorities are yet to officially confirm the latest incidents.
