Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has attributed the recent rise in criminal activities across parts of Borno State to intensified military operations, warning that individuals collaborating with insurgents will face the full force of the law.
In a statewide broadcast delivered in Maiduguri on Thursday, the governor said the renewed attacks were a direct fallout of sustained offensives by security forces, which have disrupted insurgent strongholds and forced fighters into civilian communities.
Zulum described the situation as “deeply concerning,” but maintained that security agencies remain firmly in control.
“Over the past seven years, we have worked tirelessly to restore peace and rebuild our state. We have not allowed the dark ambitions of criminal elements to take root, and we continue to foster hope and resilience among affected communities,” he said.
Security Gains, But Caution Urged
The governor highlighted ongoing collaboration between security agencies and the Civilian Joint Task Force, noting that significant progress has been made in restoring stability.
“As Chief Security Officer, I assure you that while the situation is being tested, the overall security environment remains under control. We are doing everything possible to protect lives and property,” Zulum added.
However, he cautioned that the insurgency is far from over, stressing the need for sustained efforts to address its root causes.
Military Operations Forcing Insurgents Into Communities
Explaining the resurgence of attacks, Zulum said increased military pressure has displaced insurgents from their bases.
“The recent spike in criminal activity is a direct consequence of aggressive military operations across the theatre. These operations have dislodged the criminals, forcing them to infiltrate our communities,” he said.
Despite the challenges, the governor expressed confidence that the situation would improve, noting that a coordinated response is already underway.
Warning to Collaborators
Zulum issued a stern warning to residents accused of aiding insurgents, describing them as enemies of the state.
“You are not patriots; you are enemies. You will be hunted down and made to face the full wrath of the law. Your actions undermine our collective peace, and they will no longer be tolerated,” he declared.
He also urged residents to support security agencies by providing useful information to help combat the insurgency.
Maiduguri Bombings
The governor’s remarks come days after multiple explosions rocked Maiduguri on March 16, resulting in significant casualties.
According to the Borno State Police Command, at least 23 people were killed and 108 others injured in coordinated attacks at the Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, and the Post Office Flyover.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said preliminary investigations indicate the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers, adding that security agencies responded swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further harm.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to restore calm and enhance security across the state.
