A cholera outbreak in Niger State has claimed 13 lives and led to the hospitalisation of more than 236 people across six local government areas.
The outbreak, which began on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area, has since spread to Bosso, Minna, Magama, Bida, and Munya LGAs. Health officials have confirmed a rise in cases, with Chanchaga (Minna), Bosso, and Shiroro identified as the hardest-hit areas.
In response, the state government has launched an emergency health intervention, establishing treatment and isolation centres in each of the affected LGAs.
Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, confirmed the outbreak and said the government had adopted a multi-sectoral approach to tackle the spread.
“We have set up treatment and isolation centres to mitigate the spread, and we are also embarking on aggressive sensitisation campaigns,” Dr. Dangana stated.
He added that the awareness campaigns are being directed through religious organisations, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Islamic groups, and the eight emirates within the state.
To bolster the response, an additional isolation centre has been opened at the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre on Old Airport Road, Minna.
Dr. Dangana commended Governor Umaru Bago for his swift action and also appreciated the contributions of donor agencies supporting the state’s health efforts.
Echoing the commissioner’s remarks, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, confirmed that Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro remain the epicentres of the outbreak.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as intensified efforts are underway to prevent further fatalities.
